    Tharsis energy has been promoting in-house and collaborative research for five years on the location, characterization, and valorization of organic-rich, source/reservoir rocks of the subsurface.

  • Prediction

    The location refers to the establishment of predictive depositional models, through sedimentological analysis of facies and restoration of stratigraphic architectures.

    Characterization

    The characterization of mudrocks pulls together organic (pyrolysis, palynology) and inorganic (LIBS, ICP-MS) geochemistry, mineralogy (Raman spectroscopy), and micropetrology (FIB SE Microscopy). Our purpose is to define the heterogeneities of the host-rocks and accurately determine the amount of the distinct hydrocarbon fractions and their potential accessibility/mobility.

    Valorization

    The valorization aspect includes experiments about in-situ and ex-situ, microbial methane production, i. e. biostimulation or biogas farming, from a variety of source-rocks. An alternate aspect of our studies is concerned with the recognition of natural conduits in fine-grained, tight reservoirs, of which advantages can be taken to produce oil and gas at affordable financial and environmental costs.

    Mars Exploration, Mars Science Laboratory Mission

    The geological context of search for organics in Gale Crater

    There is a Technical Assistance Agreement between the California Institute of Technology at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a NASA federally funded research and development center located in Pasadena, CA, and Tharsis-Energy to be provided with technical data necessary for conducting science mission operations activities and for assessing on-Mars performance of the ChemCam science instrument.

    Microbial methanogenesis in organic-rich rocks

    Biostimulation

    Active methanogens are present in the deep subsurface. Biostimulation, I. e. increase of natural bacterial and archaeal populations, was tested in microcosms as a method to detect and quantify the gas products and methanogenic consortia in a variety of organic-rich rocks.

    Organic molecules targeted by methanogenic microbial consortia

    Biodegradation on serial extractions

    Organic-rich shales are populated by methanogenic contortia that are able to degrade the fossilized organic matter into methane. To identify the organic fraction effectively degraded, we have sequentially depleted two types of organic-rich sedimentary rocks, shale and coal, at two different thermal maturities, by successive solvent extractions to remove the most soluble fraction (maltenes and asphaltenes) and isolate kerogen..

Our commissions range from the provision of special analyses to specialist work, delivered as standalone projects to in-house exploration teams.   • Total E&P Alternative Subsurface Data

    A laboratory for wireline tool calibration

    New facilities for characterizing logging instruments are being built at Pau (64, France). The platform will contain a variety of test formations to be used to determine the basic responses of several wireline tools. A wide range of borehole conditions and formation properties can be simulated. Tharsis has been charged with seeking and selecting the purest quartzitic and carbonate lithologies, on the basis of ICP Mass Spectrometry combined with Raman Spectroscopy.

    Oil Field Development

    Rhaetian tight sandstones, Paris Basin

    Lundin International is operating several oil fields in western Paris Basin which have been the subject of recent developments and success in enhancing production rates and reserves. The regional play is a multilayered, variably amalgamated, tight sandstone reservoir. Tharsis has been participating in the developments of the Grandville and Vert-La-Gravelle fields, by delineating the reservoir architectures through depositional facies analysis applied to high-resolution sequence stratigraphy.

    Coal Bed Methane Exploration

    Carboniferous Play, NE France

    Based in Lorraine, Française de l’Energie is a French company focusing on Coal Bed Methane (CBM) appraisal and production with the objective to become a major gas player in France and Western Europe.

    Tharsis has developed high resolution sequence stratigraphy approach on the cored sections of FOLS1 and DIEBS1 wells drilled in the Sarro-Loraine basin in France to predict the original spread of coal seams, and has acquired information about the chemical and microbial components of the formation waters.
